Summer Fun for your Hot Dog

Dog Days of SummerIt’s been a long hot summer, and it seems to just keep getting hotter! We humans can enjoy blistering temperatures by hanging out at the apartment pool, but your dog might not be enjoying the heat and humidity nearly as much as you are. When it’s too hot to go for a long walk by 7:30am, you can still keep Fido happy and provide exercise indoors! Use this super summer guide to make your dog glad that it’s too hot to go out!

Indoor Games

There are plenty of fun ways to entertain your dog inside your apartment. Try playing Hidden Treasure by hiding a few of your dogs favorite treats under pillows, in a dog bed, or even under the bed and tell Fido to “find it”. Dogs also love Hide and Seek – hide from your dog and call him, making him come to find you. Make sure to have a treat handy and show him how happy you are when he does.

Indoor time can be a great time to brush up on obedience. Practice telling your dog to sit and stay while you go into another room and then return with a treat. You can even do some agility training with an indoor obstacle course! Collect a few pillows, a shoe box, maybe a stack of books (be creative with your obstacles for extra challenge and fun). Arrange them in a pattern in your living room and teach your dog to go around, under or over your “obstacles” for a reward.

Food Puzzles

Interactive Dog ToyWhen you need a break from all the fun and fitness, try a food puzzle to keep your dog happy and entertained. Kong toys allows you to stuff food into a cavity so that your dog has to work to get the treat out. There is a wide selection of food puzzles that encourage your dog to learn how to open compartments to find the treat that can keep him busy for quite a while. Check out some of the best interactive dog toys of the moment at This Dog’s Life.

You can also make your own food puzzles! Take some old worn out tennis balls and a muffin tin, and place treats in the muffin cups. Put tennis balls in some of the cups so that your dog has to remove the ball to find the treat. If you use Kong toys, try stuffing them with pumpkin or peanut butter and freezing the toy to give Fido a long lasting treat that is perfect for a summer day.

Doggie Ice Cream

It wouldn’t be summer without ice cream, so experiment with some flavors and let Fido in on the fun! Regular ice cream can contain ingredients that can hurt our pets, but you can make your own in just ten minutes right in your Charlottesville apartment!

We recommend freezing your ice cream in an ice tray to provide individual serving sizes for your dog. Try the four fun flavors below:

Pumpkin Peanut Butter

The following recipes are tasty enough for humans and make 12 servings; adjust the quantities below to suit your personal tastes.

• 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
• 2 tbsp peanut butter (no sugar added)
• 2 tbsp honey
• 1 32-ounce container of plain yogurt

Doggie Ice CreamDirections:

1. Use a large mixing bowl; add pumpkin puree, peanut butter and honey. Whisk ingredients until smoothly textured. Melt the peanut butter first to keep it from being too sticky!
2. Fold in yogurt.
3. Place in freezer to chill for two hours.

Sweet Potato

• Plain yogurt
• Pureed sweet potato
• Peanut butter

1. Place ingredients in a food processor or whisk all ingredients together.
2. Chill in the freezer until for two hours or until ready to serve.

Banana Blueberry

Some dogs may have difficulty digesting yogurt. Banana blueberry ice cream includes only two ingredients for sensitive tummies.

• 2 bananas
• 1/2 cup blueberries

1. Peel, slice and freeze the bananas.
2. Once the bananas are frozen, process with the blueberries in blender or food processor until the mixture is creamy like ice cream.
3. Serve immediately as a yummy soft serve, or chill in the freezer to allow the ice cream to harden.
