Whether your perfect walk is in the city limits or on a mountain trail with your outward bound hound, there is a trail near Charlottesville that’s right for you.

For those who like to enjoy Charlottesville within the city limits, the Rivanna Trail starts in Riverview Park and follows the Rivanna River as it winds through Charlottesville. Dogs are allowed to walk off-leash in designated parts of the trail on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. If take your dog off-leash, he must be under control at all times – he should not be allowed to approach other walkers or dogs without permission.

Another popular trail system near the river can be found at Pen Park. You can walk your dog on the paved fitness trail, or opt for a longer hike riverside on the nature walk. Pen Park is conveniently located near Charlottesville’s Historic Downtown Mall, creating the perfect chance to enjoy the mall’s pet friendly outdoor seating while you sip a smoothie or snack on a sandwich after your walk.

Charlottesville Dog Walking TrailGreenbrier Park is also located near downtown Charlottesville. This beautiful park in the Greenbrier neighborhood features trails alongside Meadow Creek. The trails coincide with a part of the Rivanna Trail, making it easy to visit nearby McIntire Park on your adventures.

When you and Fido are looking for a little off-leash fun, visit Azalea Park. The park includes scenic trails, paved pathways and a 1 acre dog park. Darden Towe Park near the downtown area offers nearly 4 miles of trails and its own 1 acre dog park. Chris Greene Park features a variety of hiking trails, with the additional benefit of a lakeside dog park where Fido can get his feet wet.

For longer hikes or runs in the wilderness, you’ll want to take Fido to Preddy Creek Park in Northern Albemarle. The park provides ten miles of trails that wind through the forest and beside Preddy Creek. The park is the perfect spot for a long run through the woods or to let your dog splash in the creek. Less adventurous pups can take a leisurely stroll on the Meadows Loop.
