Safe and Sanitary in the Fitness Center

Using Fitness Center during covidThe cold weather and continued rise of COVID infections have made it increasingly difficult to find a safe place to enjoy a complete, effective workout. Your community fitness center is a great place to “hit the gym” without leaving home, but you must take the same precautions would in a public gym. The tips below will help you stay fit and avoid the virus.

One of the many benefits of living in an apartment community that includes a fitness center is that equipment is used exclusively by the residents of your community. No matter how few people share your fitness center, it’s still important to wear a mask, keep your hands and surfaces clean, and practice social distancing to protect the health and safety of other residents.

  • Never use the fitness center or other public amenities when you feel sick.
  • Use hand sanitizer or wash your hands when you enter the gym.
  • Wipe down the equipment before and after using it.
  • Don’t drink from public water fountains and don’t touch the mouth of your water bottle with your hands.
  • Be mindful of when you touch your phone, headphones and other personal items after using gym equipment. Sanitize these items after your work out.
  • When you return to your apartment, wash your clothes and take a shower.

Wearing a mask while you work out may seem like an unreasonable request, but adjusting your workout routine can make the change easier than you might think. If you generally only perform long, heart pumping cardio workouts that leave you breathless, now is an excellent time to mix up your routine and experiment with circuit training. Keep your heart rate up with short bursts of activity followed by short intervals of rest or weight lifting to keep you from breathing heavily.

Fitness Center Sanitation

If you’ve always wanted to practice yoga, now is a great time to try it! Yoga’s meditative effects have been proven to reduce stress, a benefit we can all appreciate as we face new challenges. The slow, measured breathing required during yoga practice also makes it easier to wear a mask, and makes it less likely that you will spread the virus. Pilates is also an effective workout that requires controlled breathing, allowing you to keep up your fitness while wearing a mask.

Pay attention to the patterns of other community members and try to work out when the gym is empty. It’s safer to avoid sharing air with other exercisers when you can. Even with a mask, it is possible to catch or transmit COVID when you are breathing heavily in an enclosed space with another person for as little as 15 minutes. Plan a few shorter workouts, perhaps one before and one after work, to minimize your time in the fitness center. It may even boost your energy level to split your workouts into smaller components!
